Wood Lathe Screws are great for finishing projects, attaching a piece of wood to a lathe, or joining two pieces of wood together. The principle is simple: drill a hole in a piece of wood and screw the WSI into the wood with an Allen key. You can then screw it onto any threaded screw of the same size. These include certain project kits, other WSIs of the same size, and home-made mandrels that are clamped into a chuck.

The diameter depends on the insert screw and the density of the wood. Sometimes it may be necessary to drill with a larger drill bit. This depends heavily on your personal experience with the wood in question. In cases where screwing a WSI into a material does not seem safe (due to the risk of cracking), we recommend using the wood insert connector ( WT_WIC ), where the wood insert connector is pressed in and often secured with an adhesive.

WSIs come in 3 different sizes:
M6 - 16.5mm in length. 10.5mm outer diameter
M8 - 16.7mm length. 12.6mm outer diameter
M10 - 19.6mm length. 15.1mm outer diameter

We leave it up to you to experiment with the material you are working on to determine the diameter of the drill you need. Usually we recommend 8.5 to 10mm for M6, 10 to 11.5mm for M8 and 13 to 14.5mm for M10. Please use this information as a guide only. Always test with a piece of wood!

An added benefit of the M8 version of the WSI (the "Classic" size) is compatibility with a wide range of WTTech project kits as well as the 100%ige  Heavy-duty mandrel (WT_HDMAN). Also, most WSI compatible kits come with WSIs.
